The Cooperative Agraria Cafetalera Sostenible Valle Ubiriki was founded by 73 producers in the towns of Perene and Pichanaki in the Upper Amazon region of Junin, Peru. In these highland regions, farmers can be very isolated with few basic services. Many households rely on subsistence farming. Coffee makes up 70% of the household income.
In 2003 a project for sustainable coffee (‘Proyeto Café Sostenible) set up farmer field schools (“Escuelas de Campo Agricultores”) to spread knowledge about quality coffee production. It used a modern approach to adult education and formed a strong bond between the people involved so they decided to form a cooperative.
This project supported Valle Ubiriki to product speciality coffee in an environmental and sustainable way. As a result, they can access the international market and improve the return to the farmer and their families. Today, Valle Ubiriki is a 2nd grade organisation with 12 base committees. Almost 20% of the members are women.
